Le Support - Fondation de la déficience intellectuelle was established in 1988 by the Association du Québec pour l’intégration sociale (AQIS), to enable it to successfully carry out its efforts and ensure its funding. The Foundation’s mission is to collect funds to support organizations that work to integrate and improve the quality of life for people with an intellectual disability.
Through its donation boxes located in more than 70 municipalities in the Greater Montreal Region, Le Support collects used clothing and other items donated by the public; selling those items enables it to fund projects submitted by organizations that assist people living with an intellectual disability. We do not receive any subsidies or grants.
A small part of the used clothing and household items that we receive comes from home pickups. But most of it is left by the public in our donation boxes. These boxes are located near businesses that have given us their permission to install the boxes.
Several other not-for-profit organizations use this same approach to fund themselves. These include Entraide diabétique, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Montreal and the Salvation Army. However, the FQDI is by far the leader in this type of collection in Quebec, because of the number of boxes installed. In 2002 the Foundation installed its first boxes. It has proven expertise.
